How USCIS counts
Form N-400 asks for each trip outside the United States in the last 5 years, or 3 for spouses of US citizens, most recent first. Trips that end within 24 hours are left off. The day of leaving and the day of returning count as days in the US.
A trip of more than 6 months is presumed to break continuous residence, and a trip of a year or more breaks it. The application may be filed 90 days before the period is complete, with at least 913 days in the US, or 548 on the 3-year path. The rules are in the USCIS Policy Manual.
