Counting days
How does Estero count a day?
A day spent in a country counts for that country. A travel day counts for both the country you left and the one you arrived in, as the Schengen and most residence rules count it. Each clock then looks back over its own window: the last 180 days for Schengen, the tax year for 183-day tests, the time since you left for residence permits.
I forgot to mark entry. Can I fix it?
Yes. Tap the entry bar above the tabs, choose the country and set the date you arrived. To start a residence clock from an earlier departure, open the clock on Today and add the day you were last there.
Does Estero need my location?
No. Without location, you mark each entry yourself. With location allowed while using the app, Estero notes the country whenever you open it. With Always, it notes arrivals even when closed and sends the arrival notice. Only the country, the city and the day are kept, and in the United States the state.
Can Estero fill in past travel?
Yes. In World, choose countries on the map, add a trip with dates, or read your photos. Estero reads the place and date of your photos from the last three years on the phone and proposes the trips it finds. Only trips with dates count towards the rules.
Which residence rules and citizenship routes does Estero know?
Residence absence rules for the United Arab Emirates, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, and the Schengen 90/180 rule. Citizenship countdowns for the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany. More are added over time.
Is Estero legal or tax advice?
No. Estero counts days and shows how the rules it knows would apply. Rules change and officials decide. Confirm with the authority or an adviser before relying on a date. See the Terms of Use.
Documents
Which documents can Estero scan?
Passports, visas, residence cards, ID cards and driver's licenses. Lay the document flat. On a passport, keep the two lines of letters and arrows at the bottom in view. On a card, the side with the barcode or the lines of arrows reads best. Check each detail before saving; you can also enter everything by hand.
When will Estero remind me to renew?
Passports get a start date about ten weeks before the last day that still leaves six months of validity, since many borders refuse entry below that. Permits and visas get a start date three months before expiry and a finish-by date a month before. You are reminded ahead of each date, and can add them to your calendar.
Backup and new phones
What happens if I lose or replace my iPhone?
iCloud backup is on by default. On the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account, install Estero and choose Restore my Estero. You can also export a file from Settings, Your data, and import it on any iPhone.
How do I delete everything?
In Estero, Settings, Erase everything. This removes your documents, trips and days from the iPhone and from the iCloud backup.
Plans and settings
How do I cancel a subscription, or get it back on a new phone?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple: on your iPhone, open Settings, your name, Subscriptions. To bring an existing subscription to a new phone, open Estero Pro in Estero's Settings and choose Restore purchases. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do I add family members?
With Estero Family, open Settings, People, and add up to four people. Each has their own documents, clocks and renewals. Switch between people from the top of Today. Anyone who travels with you shares your days automatically.
How do I change the language?
In Estero, Settings, Language. Estero speaks English, Arabic, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Italian, French and Russian, and follows your iPhone's language unless you choose another.
How do I add the widget?
On the Home Screen, touch and hold an empty area, tap Edit, then Add Widget (on iOS 17, tap +), and choose Estero. On the Lock Screen, touch and hold, tap Customize, then Lock Screen, tap the space below the time and choose Estero. The small widget is free; the medium and Lock Screen widgets come with Pro.
